ARTICLE: PEDIA-SURE, ENSURE, OTHER NUTRITION DRINKS RECALLED
Article from the Food Safety News
The maker of some of North America’s best known “dense nutrition”
liquids, which are frequently used for young children and elderly or
sick adults, is recalling more products in relation to at least one
illness.
Although the nature of the illness has not been reported, recall
notices for the Abbott products reference the possibility bacterial
contamination. Canadian officials reported consumer complaints triggered
the product recalls.
Abbott, a multinational corporation with a range of health-related
divisions, initially recalled three of its liquid nutrition products on
Sept. 23. The company distributed those products to retailers nationwide
in Canada, according to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). At
that time Canadian officials were investigating one illness associated
with the consumption of the products.
The CFIA’s Oct. 15 notice also referenced only one illness, but it added more than a dozen products to the recall list.
“This additional information was identified during the Canadian Food
Inspection Agency’s food safety investigation in collaboration with
Abbott,” according to the Oct. 15 recall notice.
“Abbott is recalling certain Abbott brand formulated liquid nutrition
products in 235 mL metal cans from the marketplace due to possible
bacterial contamination. Consumers should not consume and distributors,
retailers and food service establishments such as hospitals and nursing
homes should not sell or use the recalled products described below.”
Anyone who has consumed any of the recalled products and become sick,
or served them to someone who then became ill, is urged to seek medical
attention.
The CFIA is verifying that industry is removing recalled product from
the marketplace. If other high-risk products are recalled, the CFIA
will notify the public through updated Food Recall Warnings.
